U.S. HIST 2-Week 5

Out of the three sections, it was very hard for me to choose which one was most disturbing. Each talk about how the meats were contaminated, the harsh working conditions, and the insanitation of the plants. Sections one and three were both very disturbing but I believe section one was the most disturbing. Section one talked about the working conditions of these hard workers. The workers had to face the harshest working conditions and they had to endure through the worst circumstances. Most of them had their hands brutally mauled and worn down by the demands of their jobs. Their hands were cut, swollen, and even had their skin peeled off due to the constant exposure of acid. The way it describes how the workers would fall into vats and would basically rot and their bones crushed up and sent with the lard to be sold into the public. That is beyond disgusting and makes my stomach turn not knowing what is in the food that people ate at that time. Each position had its own life expectancy due to the diseases, steam, and manual labor that the individuals had to endure during their time working there. There is still amazement how far America has come as a country to provide a safe work environment now than it did 100 years ago.

It is really crazy to think that this was only about 100 years ago. The working conditions were so bad, I don’t know how these people continued to work there. People were dying off left and right, and I think you explained your choice well.

I also choose section 1 because these were people just like you and I having to work in terrible conditions. It is very surprising to compare
the working conditions of America now and then. I know if i had to go though what those men had to endure, I would not last.
